Cripple Creek's core is a National Historic Landmark district built after the 1890s gold rush, so most of what we paint is wood: clapboard, drop siding, and trim on houses that predate 1910. At 9,494 feet in Teller County, UV comes through thin air hard, and south and west walls chalk out years before north walls do. House painting here lives or dies on prep and back-priming bare wood.

Freeze-thaw is the other enemy. Cripple Creek gets snow that sits, melts on a sunny afternoon, and refreezes overnight, and that cycle drives water into every hairline crack. On stuccoed additions and commercial walls that shows up as spider cracking and delamination at the base. Stucco repair means cutting out the loose material, rebuilding the coat, then sealing with stucco painting that can still breathe.

Decks and porches take the worst of it. Uncovered fir and pine at this elevation goes gray and fuzzy in a couple of seasons.
